Overview

csSimpleShear

The Clisp Studio csSimpleShear module is an add-on to the core package (csHost) that makes it easy for the User to set-up, control and monitor all forms of standard Simple Shear Testing in soil testing laboratories, and collate and output the results in industry standard or User defined format.

Create

Simple Shear Test Setup

Clisp Studio csSimpleShear comes with the easiest test creation and setup of any Geotechnical software package available today. Choose the test type you require, select the appropriate Standard and proceed through the steps of the wizard, initially setting up the specimen details and hardware relevant to your Test set up.

Test Definition

The Clisp Studio Simple Shear Software module confoms to ASTM D6528-07, the recognised International Standard for Simple Shear testing. Once the Test has been selected and named it is defined.

When opened, the Test Assistant (wizard) will be displayed on the Test Screen along with the associated menus.

Wizard Driven Setup

The powerful and intuitive Test Wizard will guide you through the Test setup, from the selection of the Hardware to be used and details of the Specimen, through to the data required for the different Consolidation increments and Shear stages.

Hardware Setup

Because research establishments and laboratories often have numerous Testing Stations with many different Instruments, the Hardware setup screen will only show the relevant choices to your Installed Hardware, thus enabling easy selection of the right Instrument required for Control or Transducer Input.

Specimen Details Setup

The Dimensions setup screen will automatically calculate & display the Specimen’s Area, Volume and Bulk Density from the entered data. The Moisture setup screen will automatically calculate and display the Specimen’s Moisture, Dry Density, Voids Ratio & Degree of Saturation from the entered data.

Configure

Simple Shear Test Configuration

With Clisp Studio you have complete control of Simple Shear testing for both stages. Each stage can be configured to perform a standards based test or a custom test specific to your exact needs.

Consolidation Stage Setup

This Stage consists of one or more increments, each applying a defined initial Load. Data logging is initiated upon a specified Load or Displacement change, and the required data can be logged at a prescribed time interval, from a predefined table or on a specific Settlement change.

You can specify the Consolidation stage to be stopped when the Settlement changes by less than a specified amount within a selected time period and/or a specified maximum time is exceeded.

Shear Stage Setup

For the Shear Stage, data logging is triggered when the Load changes at an input rate, and can be carried out either at a specified rate, when horizontal strain changes by a particular percentage or horizontal displacement changes by a specified amount. Shear and Reverse speeds can be changed manually in the table.

The Shear stage can be terminated when the calculated Shear stress has fallen consecutively a defined number of times and/or when the horizontal strain changes by an input percentage.

Execute

Simple Shear Test Execution

You are able to monitor the status and condition of the Simple Shear test as it proceeds. Live Views, Graphs and Tables show test progress while summary windows give Instrument, test and sample status at a glance.

Live Test Views

For both Consolidation and Shear stages, we offer predefined live data views to observe the most commonly measured variables (such as vertical and Horizontal Load and Displacement) and calculated data (such as Displacement, Normal Stress, Voids Ratio, t95 value etc.) for the specimen being tested, while the Test Stage is running. The User can also customize the desired Live Data from the list of variables that are relevant to that particular stage.

Live Graphical and Table Views

Predefined graphs and tables are available for you to view both the Consolidation and Shear stages as they progress. The Consolidation graph plots Time vs. Vertical Displacement and for the Shear stage both Shear Strain and Shear and Normal Stress graphs are available. The tables for both stages display the most commonly measured parameters and expected results at the specified logging intervals.

Report

Simple Shear Test Results

As well as the completed Live Data View, Graph and Table, csSimpleShear gives you an additional Results table as well as an extremely useful Summary Report and other more specific reports.

Consolidation Results

The Consolidation Results provide you with the Vertical Displacement change, the t95 value, the Voids Ratio and the Normal Stress.

Shear Results

The Shear Results give the Vertical and Horizontal Displacement change, Voids Ratio, Shear Stress, Normal Stress, Shear Strain, Peak Shear Stress, Shear Strain at Peak Stress, Axial Strain and the Secant Shear Modulus.

There are four predefined graphs as follows:

  • Shear Strain : Shear Strain vs. Shear Stress
  • Normal Stress : Time vs. Normal Stress
  • Shear Stress : Axial Stress vs. Shear Stress
  • Logarithmic Shear : Shear Strain vs. Secant Shear Modulus

Data Export and Import

Clisp Studio has the ability to export data to MS Excel for further manipulation. The Test can also be exported to a script file which can be imported when creating a new Test if desired. This enables Tests from the current or older versions of Clisp Studio to be cloned or even rerun if required. This facility is extremely useful for Test exchange between laboratories or investigation of an issue by VJ Tech.

Reports

As well as the overall summary report, csSimpleShear provides the following reports:

  • Consolidation: Time vs Vertical Displacement
  • Strain vs. Stress & PwP
  • Log Strain vs. Log Shear Modulus
  • Effective Axial Stress vs. Shear Stress
